Dan
has been married to his wife Christine for 23 years. They live in
Westfield. They have 2 beautiful daughters. Mary who is a freshman
at Endicott College outside of Boston, and Shannon who is a
sophomore at Westfield High School. Their dog, Molly, is a Bernese
Mountain dog who is the Kane's third -- and most spoiled -- child.
The Dan Kane Singers began in 1977 when Dan was
just 16 years old. There was a small local group of about 15 adult
singers that performed in various charity concerts in the city of
Holyoke. They were based out of a very popular restaurant called
Gleason's Townhouse. One
of Dan's teachers/mentors was the great
Jackie Hague, who was the
original leader/director of that group. When they disbanded in
1977, Dan's dad, Jim Kane
(one of the singers from Gleason's), volunteered his son to take
over the reins. That is when the fun began.
In time, Dan added his own signature sound to
the group and developed it. He added some talented friends his own
age, he grew the group, expanded upon on its already great
reputation. Before long 15 singers became 30 singers, then 60
singers, then 100 singers.... Today the group has over 150 members
ranging in age from 6-80 years old. Even the concert venues have
changed from a small restaurant to a small hall, a 600 seat hall of
Springfield Symphony Hall
to the 2500 seats Mass Mutual
Center where their annual Christmas Show (sponsored
by BIG Y World Class Markets) was televised annually on
TV from this huge arena that seats over 5000 fans.
Through
the years Dan's exceptional playing abilities (keyboard, piano and
organ) have allowed him to record on more than 50 CD's with
countless talented singers and musicians. He has hosted his own
radio show spotlighting local talent (sponsored
by the Hannoush Family
Jewelers).
His annual
Summer Singing Program for 160
Children is ranked #1 in Western Massachusetts, and has
often been credited as a starting point for many local talented
young singers headed for stardom. He has been the organist at
St. Patrick's Church in Springfield
for 30 years with his dad Jim Kane. At his home, he gives private
lessons and coaching to a host of top young singers who often are
seen throughout the area, performing with him.
Dan
has called numerous musical venues his home at many different points
in his career, including The
Delaney House, The Log
Cabin, The Yankee Pedlar Inn,
Chez Joseph, The Munich House, The Big E, Springfield Symphony Hall
and yes even the Ludlow Correctional Institution (as a musician, not
a resident). No doubt one of the high points of his career was
playing in Washington DC for
President Bill Clinton
with his dad, thanks to his former Cathedral High School Teacher,
Congressman Richard Neal.
Both he and his wife Christine are teachers.
Dan has been a Special Needs educator for the city of Westfield for
27 years. He currently teaches at
Franklin Avenue School.
His brother Jim Kane Jr.
is the Principal of Juniper Park
Elementary and Fort Meadow Schools.
